    Linux security...unwanted services

    Appears to be a very useful link...

    Tells you which services should be active and which should not. It even tells you how to turn services off! (rc.d)

    This only tells you about services started by Red Hat's init scripts.

    Another thing to look out for is your /etc/inetd.conf file. Any line that's uncommented in that file is an open port. I have the whole file commented out (I probably could've just deleted it but I kept it just in case).

    Of course, if you're actually using any of these services (ftp, telnet, whatever) you should keep them on.
