    Linux install with Monitor problem

I am tring to install RH 7 and use a Daewoo 14" vga monitor. It workes OK in windows with res at 840x460 but in the linux install the window is bigger than the screen. Is there a fix for the other than a newer monitor?

    Thanks
    Bruce

On a command line, try typing in: Xconfigurator you should be able to reconfigure your display.

    hello,
there is a file called /etc/X11/XF86Config (maybe /etc/X11/XF86Config-4). in there is is a line under the section 'Screen' , see if there is anything called desktop size or virural, you can also try usng xf86config to set it up.

I think both suggestions fill work but, I seem to have not made a root whatever. Does this mean reinstall? If so can I also do some kind of format or should I?

    hello,
if you don't know the root password reboot and type linux 1 at the LILO prompt,
this will put you in single user mode. at the prompt type passwd and you should be able to change the password. if this fails try deleting the file /etc/passwd . then root will have no password.

Thanks Paul & randy48. I think you can read how new I am. I managed to get into root and tried to config for my monitor. I thought I set it to standard vga 640 x 480 256 color but it does not seem to be working. Do I have to reboot for it to take effect? I am now stuck in X and cannot reach the exit button. Those setting should have worked shouldn't they?

I don't know, I set it up both ways in Xconfig but still no go. Still not a total loss. I learned who root was and how to get out of linux without doing a scandisk. Thanks for the help ! Past my bed time TTUL

Could you provide a little more info? What chipset is on your motherboard?

I installed Linux on an HP6535, which has an Intel mobo with the i810 chipset. Mandrake Linux 7.1 didn't support this chipset, and gave me the same problem. Mandrake 7.2 works fine.
