old seagate 5,25 inch harddrive SCSI

hi there i was given a old drive a seagate st4766 n with +- 700 meg (for cd images)when i install it on my symbios logic pci scsi controller with a philips cdd2000 writer and a ibm 1 gig scsi drive the drive is not seen
in dos in win98 i can see it only in the device manager and only in windows i can do a
fdisk or play with partitionmagic 4.0
when i make a primary partition and reboot
there is still no drive to see in dos or normal windows what is going on ?even if i connect it to my scsi controller with the other drives of and i give the had id 0 the same result (with startup i see the drive also in the pci scsi bios )but not in dos or windows is it dead ? windows by the way thinks that it is a cdc pherials (earlier seagate) i looked at the jumpersettings at seagate.com and jumpered it right but no go !
with the symbios logic tools in dos i can low level format it (wich i also did)so i think the drive is not dead and it makes noise when the scsi bios is recognizing the drive and the led on the drive is blinking then anyone knows the problem ?
i just dont want to throw the drive away
and i have 17 gig total so space enough but i want tho get that sucker to work .

I think that your old drive is slow to provide system with an ID and name, if you can slow down timeout on controller then that may correct this problem.
