W2k Server on 96 MB RAM

I have a small network at home with 2 W2K clients, and a Windows 2000 server running on a Pentium Pro 200 with 96MB Ram. I had things working OK for a couple of days, but now serveral services won't run, and I'm unable to start them manually or change their startup values. I believe the problem is due to the lack of RAM. M$ don't even support any server running less than 128MB.

Does anyone know where I can get details of how to tune a W2K server to reduce memory usage, or have any tweaks that may be of use?

Note the machine uses SIMMs, and currently has all slots filled, so I'd rather not purchase any extra memory - it wouldn't be worth spending much money on a machine with a limited life.

Sorry, you need to have ALL the basic services for W2K Server to run properly. I installed it on a machine with Dual 533mhz and 196 mb of ram and Win2K Server ran alright. But you need to get 256mb of Ram for a decent performance. Sorry to let you know. You really don't want to f**k with the services on Win2K. I tried many and it just causes many hours of support. Find the $$$ and blow it. Or else upgrade the MB and buy SDRAM!!!

Sorted out the problems by doing an over install of server. Retained all of the settings, and now the servers working again.

Also checked M$ site, and they recommned setting optimise for applications rather than file server (in order to reduce the amount of memory used for disk caching).

Did that, and it's working fine again. Though the system is never going to be speedy.

I run a p90 with 96MB ram as my home server with linux for my two win boxes and it runs great!! nfs/nis/http/ftp/samba/ip-masq/squid

everything runs and on top I login (it's headless) to play games. You'll never believe it's a p90!

Have you thought about an OS that stresses the system less yet performs identical (if not better -but lets not argue) yet faster? not to mention free?

EDIT: it's a PPRO 200 that you have! That would fly in linux!!

I've tried using Linux on this machine in the past (both Red Hat, and Corel)running as a desktop machine, and yes they're both fast. I have downloaded a copy of Mandrake, and will be trying it out on one of my machines when time permits. However, I'm using W2K in order to train myself on the system, and prepare myself for certification.

Actually, for a file and print server, I'd probably install OS/2 Warp Server, but then again, I am a bit sick in the head ;-))
