My Issues with WIN2k, please help
Let me begin by saying I love win2k and im sure these are just bugs that will get worked out later on, but,
Whenever I try to save a pic from a website onto my computer, I either get a BSOD that says begginning to dump physical memory (we discussed that in an earlier thread of mine) or it automatically restarts itself. This is not a good trait to have. any ideas on why? I have an Asus P3b-f mobo and someone said i should flash it with the lastest bios, but im not to hip to trying that..
Secondly, How do I turn of the direct CD feature of adaptec in win2k? is there a comparable feature to msconfig in win2k? I think its the cause of many problems (it was for me in win98) any help would be very appreciated and woudl result in tea and cake for everyone.

I would also be intrested in knowing of something such as MSCONFIG for W2K also.
I thought Direct CD was not compatible with W2K? What version are you running? You may need to uninstall Direct CD.
I have Adaptec EZ-CD creator 4 but did not install direct cd. I had the create cd icon in my tray but disabled it by right clicking on it and selecting disable.
Is there a W2K BIOS flash for your board? If there is one specific to W2K I would recommend flashing them then, if not why bother?

Chip,
As Jad mentioned I would check to see if your version of bios is compatable with Win2K as it will effect overall stability. As for getting BSOD when saving internet pic's I would tend to think you have a bad install of IE/system dll's. You might want to run the SFC and see if you have any missing or corrupt system files. As for a MSCONFIG the Win2K "version" is in the form of the "services" appalet found in the control panels/admin tools. from that applet you will see what is set to autostart/manual start whats currently running and lots of other fun stuff
I dont beleive that Adaptec has released a version of Direct CD that is supported under Win2k so I would uninstall that application ASAP as it caused mega-headaches for me when I first tried installing the full EZ-CD 4.0 suite!
Good Luck

If you want to keep direct CD from loading, try opening the registry (start--run--regedit) and checking the
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\curr ent version\run or runServices.
This is where many softwares install their 'autorun' feature. Also, with the BSOD, make sure you have the most recent driver for you video card. While win2k comes with most, it may not be 'tweaked' for your video card. Also, did you install another version of IE on top of the one that comes with Win2k? (for instance, the @home cd 1.7 installer has an older version). That could be it. If you were to reinstall Win2k (would not loose any of yoru settings) that may resolve it..or do what stud-man Mntsnow suggested and run the SFC'er.

Thanks Guys.
I have removed the direct cd from my registry file, I am really sure this is part of the problem as it has always been a headache. I installed the ez cd creator with the patch for win2k but never do I remember wanting to put direct cd on, and no where can I find for it to be turned off once it has started. Hopefully problem solved. As for my video card I have a ATI rage 32mb agp card, which installed the drivers from the win2k cd, so I have the latest ones.
I have heard, but shamefully have been too lazy to find out, that there is a bios update for my Asus board. A lot of people, myself included, have noticed that win2k will lock up when trying to shut down with this motherboard, and this update will correct that, among other things. I will see what I can find.
Thanks again guys for the help, It is very appreciated. please keep the windows 2000 tips coming, this is probably the forum I learn the most from on sysopt
<<quick update>> ahhhhhh...so nice to no longer see that icon in the taskbar....I am such a minimalist sometimes..now if i could get rid of the audiohq one also..hmm...next stop, regedit!

Just FYI, the patch for Direct Cd at adaptec which will allow it to work in Win2K is only usable IF you have EZ Cd Creator version 4 installed.
