Which OS for 64mb RAM
Which OS should I use if I have 64mb SDRAM using a Celeron 433. Is 64Mb RAM enough to keep windows 98 flying. Or should I just go for Windows 95 or upgrade to the new Windows 2000 Pro, any help would be great.

64 megs with a Celeron will run all 3 OS's but for "optimal" performance I would recommend 128 for Win98 and Definately for Win2K. Thus that leaves you with Win95. But FYI I have installed and ran all 3 OS's on as little as 32 megs

I'm running 64mgs (K6-2 350 @400) with Win2000. I say 128mgs for W2K as well.
Edit: Just swapped a 128mg stick into the W2K box and things are running very smooooth

Im running a PII 350 64MB Ram with a ASUS P2B AGP 100 MHz motherboard on windows98! and have no real problems with RAM.I think 64MB ram should be more then enough to run win98.

i originally ran 98 with 32 MB, talk about slow but it worked. 64 should do. Set yourself a static 100MB swapfile and you should be set.

i am currently running both Win2k and 98 on 32mb RAM, so it IS possible to do so... i did not hardly tweak my computer at all to get it to run either.... win98 and 2k are both slow (the latter being the slower of the two), but they run just fine IMO....
BTW, socalgal, if you need help on that page file setting, just LMK... i don't know how to find out what my setting is, but you seem to know how to check it, so just e-mail me.... ( CujoRbd@hotmail.com )
again, i must say that they run slow, but i am not complaining... 2k (IMO) runs no slower on my puter than 98, so you could do either one... (i'd reccomend 98 unless you are into networking or the like... i would also reccomend that if you like playing heavy 3d or 2d games, that you would stick with, or get, 98 cuz 2k doesn't support most of them yet...)
just my $0.02...
anywayz...

To check the paging/swap file, right click MyComputer|Properties|Advanced|Performance Options.

How much RAM would I have left it I only ran the Win98 default startup programs. (after everything loaded) With 64mb RAM?
-
64MB is FINE with Win98 and most applications as long as you run the applications one at a time. For example, you do not really want to run MSWord, Photoshop, and surf the net all at the same time on only 64MB of RAM.
I ran Win98/ 64MB with various applications for a long time, and even Photoshop was acceptable if I kept the files down to a reasonalble size and save the work frequently. However, if you are going to do any serious photowork I recommend at least 256MB - gives room for the unlimited "undos."

I somehow managed to run Win98 on 32MB of RAM and a 233MMX processor for days straight. Sure it ran extremely slow at times, but it ran. Main reason for running it 24/7 for days on end was b/c it served as our answering machine for a while. Now my PII-350 running 64MB of RAM and Win2k does that job. 64MB seems to be plenty for Win2k; I can run several browser windows, Napster, WinAmp, and even burn CDs at the same time with little problem. I'm sure it'll all be a lot faster when my additional 64MB gets here, though.
So as mentioned above, either of the 3 OS's will work with 64MB of RAM, it's just a matter of how well you want them to work that'll determine which one is best for you.

If I ran Win2k and Win98 with 64mb RAM, because I have less RAM when I load Win2k, will that mean I get slower performance when playing 3d games such as Q3a and UT?
-
One of my friend run a Pentium 150 with 32mg of ram on Win98. Sure it was slow but loading half-life took hours.

Doesn't matter, I'm gonna upgrade to 128mb ram instead of 64mb. Should I go for Win2k now???
