    Thumbs up PPPoE for Win2000

Is it cheating? Well... It works!! And I am one happy camper about now!

I just couldn't configure (NT newbie...) DHCP for Win2000 with my DSL provider, Earthlink (ELN).

ELN has a dynamic IP system for DSL and after struggling to get Win2000 online for days, I found this at someone's site. So if you are in the same situation, you might want to try it:

    Scroll down to:
'PPP over Ethernet Protocol for Windows 2000'

I installed PPPoE and got online smooth as silk. Adjusted security settings and Shields Up reports me as a Private Network - everything is closed and says there's no outside access. BlackICE has yet a hit.

A triumph for this W2K newbie.

Congrats! Well done, Socalgal. I knew you could do it. Your information is entirely inapplicable to anything I'm presently doing, but kudos nonetheless! It's good to read you're finally getting the hang of this computing phenom.

    Brangwen

ps: In about 7 hours I'm installing under W2K the SupraExpress modem that FedEx dropped off today. Send positive vibes!

Thanks, Brangwen. And positive vibes beaming your way!

I was especially pleased with the security testing results - so far. Next I have to get the two systems on SyGate or ICS so I can use the single DSL connection. (Right now I'm sneaker-cable-plugging-it lol).

I hope it works with this PPPoE setup. I probably should just kick down and get a hub...

Good luck with that DSI driver too!

Oh, and any pros/cons/suggestions for the above are welcome!

Good for you SocalGal! I love having the "private network" response from the sheilds-up site. I also went to the other one (Dont have the link with me But Scott had mentioned it in another thread a while ago) I had them do a schedualed scan and they finally gave up as they could not find me

Mntsnow (I have all my computers getting this same response and I love it!)

Thanks Mntsnow I hadn't seen that Private Network page result before.. I was kind of scared til I read it through.

That other scanner prog is the secure-me site, I bet?. I'll be heading there, and to privacy.net, tomorrow.
