    Linux DNS Problem

Well LinuxGurus, I know you are out there, here's one that shouldn't be too much trouble, but is a real pain in the *** for a newbie for me.

I just installed Linux on my Box (Mandrake 6.0), and everythning works beautifully except for DNS.

The TCP/IP config appears to be okay. I can ping ip addresses, but it just won't resolve host names.

I'm on a LAN connection on a college campus.

I've got all of the correct DNS server ips, but it still doesn't work.

Netscape does mention that something like the SOCKS_NS something needs to point to the DNS server, but I have no idea what that is.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Well, I found out that it wasn't DNS's fault, it was actually very screwed up routing.

I could ping my computer, and others on the local network (to some extent), but when I tried an outside computer (www.yahoo.com and a few others) but nothing would work.

Basically, it was outside computers that i was testing DNS on, so I thought that DNS didn't work.

After getting some good advice from a friend of mine, i tried Nslookup, which to my amazement worked on all systems. Then, I looked at the routing tables, and I found the problem.

I had to use "route" to add a direct route to my gateway, then set the gateway as the default route.

Whew, and there you have it.
