    Win 98 Won't Shut Down!!!

When I shut down wind00ze, everything closes, and goes to black, but it seems to stick there. It doesn't matter if i tell it to shut down, restart or restart to dos, it still hangs.

Any ideas here? I'm sure I'm not the first one to have this happen...

Disabling quick shut down doesn't help either...

    Any help appreciated...

    C 'ya,

    Mike P.

    Ain't technology wonderful!

    I've had similar problems with 95 & 98.

There is probably a driver of piece of hardware that is not completely compatible with Windows. Verify that everything on your computer is compatible with Windows. Also be sure that you have the most up to date versions of drivers and software and that there are no new patches that may fix this problem.

Usually I just crash the system and restart. Then I undo the last thing that I did to the system and see if that sovles it. If that does it, try finding out from someone if there is a fix.

If that doesn't do it, start a process of elimination. If it is a fresh install, try removing all non-essential software and hardware. If it works after this, start reinstalling the stuff you took out one at a time until you have a problem.

If these options don't work, you're screwed!

I had the shut down problem after I installed WIN98SE. It seems my Creative SoundBlaster Live! was the culprit. I uninstalled it and am now using a cheap Yamaha sound card. No shut down problems.

One possible culprit is the "Fast Shutdown" option in 98. I had a problem shutting down, and then I turned it off and it worked.

Run,msconfig, and choose advanced options and then disable fast shutdown (or un-enable it I don't remember which)

    Hope it helps.

I too had to disable the "fast shutdown" on my system. I have a Soundblaster Live using the newest "livewire" drivers and not a hiccup since disabling the "fast shutdown" make sure you have the newest drivers for ALL of your perfs (like NIC's, Sound ect) and DISABLE "Fast shutdown".

I agree with everyone. Not much new help but there certainly are a lot of problems with PCI sound cards. Something is refusing to completely shut down. Start with the Sound driver first. Then video drivers . Good luck. Jake

I'll try it, because it'll shutdown clean from safe mode, even restart if i tell it to, but not from win.

    Thanks again,

I suddenly have this same problem. I discovered that when the system hangs a could stil press ctrl-alt-del (once) and i get the window with the running procs/apps. Then i terminate them one by one execpt explorer. If i terminate "imgicon" for my zip-drive whatch, everythings oges oke after that. Suggest you check this for your situation.
