inexpesive modem recommendation
Hi all,
Iset up my computer with a dual boot of Linux and win98.
I have got everything to work except the modem- found out its a winmodem.
Can anyone recommend a cheap 56k modem. Mail order is not an option unless they do COD.
Thanks in advance for all replies.

hi there buy a nice cheap *** isa modem with
some voice **** a external is the easiest way
but expensive !!! i have a wisecom isa modem
that works fine under linux

My recommendation is a Creative Modem Blaster 56K, the ISA "hard-modem" version. Not that cheap but a good modem.

Thanks I'll look into those types. The creative one sounds like what i'm looking for.

Will Zoom modems and Hival modems work with linux. What ever one I get will be a PCI modem so I can take advantage of the faster bus speed.

grizco - communications via modem, even 56k modems, is so slow it hardly matters what bus the thing is on. But one thing you should be aware of is that, with very few exceptions, PCI modems are generaly "soft" modems (i.e. "winmodems").
Here is a link to one of the only true "hard" PCI modems (i.e. not-a-winmodem) that I am aware of: http://www.actiontecstore.com/modems/cwi.html

Try the hardware compatability list for your verson of Linux. It should list all compatable modems.then find one thats affordable...I use a USR 56k and it will only work if you pin it out to com3 irq4
and disable the plug and play.
