My 3D performance in Quake 2 sucks
I have an ATI Xpert@Play 98. What can I do to increase performance. How do I check how many FPS I get in Quake 2?
Please send help...

First of all get a pentium class cpu!! Can pick one up for about $60.
Then a decent video card like a voodoo2 or tnt card, both are very inexpensive Have at least 64mb ram.
Quake command:
In consol type: "timedemo 1" then, "map demo1.dm2" This will display your Frames Per Second. 30fps is a decent score. For your current setup i'd guess you will get about 13fps at 640*480. By the way that video card you have is no good for gameing because it does not accelerate when used with opengl or directx.

My card has a ATI Rage Pro chipset and does accelerate OpenGL because I used to play GLQuake at 30FPS months ago. I can run Quake2 with default OpenGL and the performance is smooth once in a while but when you go into wide open spaces, it drops to barely anything. Direct3D or "DirectX" works also because I play Monster Truck Madness 2 in Direct3D Mode all the time.
By the way, is the TNT availabe in a PCI mode? I know someone who has the AGP version, and they have killer performance (70+ fps), so if it is in PCI BUS version, I might have to pick that up. Thanks for the advice, anyhow.

Voodoo 3 3000 is now available in PCI. Think it comes in at $149.99. 7 million polygons per sec. Might be easier than changing your mobo

Why did you ask how to test fps in quake2 if you say you got 30fps months ago? If you didn't know how to test fps yesterday then how did you know how to test for fps a month ago? Using direct 3d YES it does excellerate but NOT in opnegl! I had the same card. You seem confused. Please clarify this for me and run a fps test in quake 2 at 640*480 using opengl and tell me your fps. Sorry but 30 fps is bull SH*T using that card!

I have a K6-2 500mhz running a Rage Pro Turbo 2X with 8mb and my fps is a ****ty 12fps. That is horrible. And I am running software mode at 800x600 using 3D Now! I know this is true, I was wondering if it is possible to buy a PCI voodoo 3 and run them together and get way better performance.

he said glquake not quake2!That is a version of quake1,and yes it is possible he was getting 30fps in glquake. And he probably was not sure if the bench mark command in glquake was the same as quake2(which it is not.
