different problems with Half-Life

Hey, I bought Half-Life:Game of the Year edition"
and just after I double-click to start it, it starts to load but then it quickly jumps back into windows as a minimized window. I can then click on that minizmized window and then the screen appears saying something about 296:system error or something. I can then pick cancel, get basically the same error again but it doesn't jump back into windows, pick cancel, then start the game.

So what I've come to understand is that there is an error trying to play the .avi? valve video and whatever the other one is. I can explore the cd directories and find them there and play them. Also, I figure that this is related to my not being able to see the image of my character in the multiplayer character selection screen.

Anyone know what I need to do?

I'll buy that copy off you if you can't get it to work Maybe it will work on my system.
At least this way you will get some money back Email me if things don't work out.

I'm using a voodoo monster3d. I can play the game fine, its just the character select screen in multiplayer and the error when starting up that are the problem. If I can't fix them, I'm still going to play the game. They are just an annoyance.
