try FreeSpace2
If you like Descent and other space similator games, give FreeSpace2 a try. It's still kinda expensive, but in my humble opinion, worth it. FreeSpace2 takes from Wing Commander, Star War's X-Wing v.s. Tie Fighter and Alliance, and combines the two. Look it up on the internet and read the reviews (use Altavista-yes, the search engine that is monitored by the NSA and CIA-it is one of the best, thus why it is monitored). With unbelievable high-end graphics (you NEED a 3D accelerator card), high end sound (Sound Blaster surround sound EAX is directly built in, supported, and highly recommended, as is a serious joystick), you should have a high-end computer, along with at least 1.5 Gigs of free hard drive space, and 64 meg Ram. The game is wrapped in a plot line that was well-done.
This game is a 3D, first person space combat Dogfight game with a compelling storyline and plot. If you're looking for a good game, this is another to buy!

I agree, great game but
if you want something even better try
X Beyond The Frontier by egosoft.
It's Elite 3 and it doesn't force you into
missions.

Yup I agree X Beyond Frontier is nice.
I also picked up Interplay's budget release of Battlecruiser3000AD v.2.08.
Anyone into space games may know the tortured history of this game.
It now seems stable, bug-free and has a 3dfx mode.
Freeform space exploration, exploitation and combat. You can even capture space stations and level whole planets! It's worth a look for anyone who doesn't like scripted stuff. Think of it as an NCC1701 (the original) simulator. Its 5 year mission....
Haven't gotten into it much yet, but it is a MASSIVE game. Will be reporting back at a later date.

PS In response to the Freespace system reqs, BC3000AD is a repatched and updated DOS game. It needs a P166, a 2MB video card, Soundblaster or compatible, and around 150MB hard drive space. This means it doesn't stretch my V3 3000 much

I can't find how to get more than 640x480
In setup it detects only D3D640x480(32bit)
I use Celeron 300a@374, TNT2, 128PC100
