I had that same error with mine.
This is from 3do's web site under heroes3 FAQs
http://www.3do.com/products/pc/heroes3/

Question (3-3-99): I am trying to install Heroes III on my AMD K6II. After the DirectX installs and I pass through the welcome screen, I get an 'Illegal operation error in ins5576' (chkreqs.dll). How can I get passed this?

Answer: This is where the installer checks your system to make sure your system meets the minimum system requirements. On some AMD K6II machines there is an error in the way the information is queried. The workaround for this is as follows:

Launch the Heroes III installer and select YES or NO at the DirectX prompt (it does not matter which is selected).
At the welcome screen, minimize the install by selecting the left-most button at the top of the installer window.
Open either 'My Computer' or 'Windows Explorer' and navigate to your C:\Windows\Temp folder.
Once you are in the 'Temp' folder look for a folder called _istemp#.dir (where # is any number). If there are more than one folder that look like this, select the one with the highest number and double click on it to enter this folder.
Once in the folder locate the folder called _istmp0.dir and double click to enter this folder.
Locate the file called chkreqs.dll and delete it. (If you cannot locate this file, select the View option at the top of the window and then Folder Options. On the View tab you will see a list of options, select the Show all Files button. And press OK.)
To make sure that the file is deleted, empty your recycle bin (if you have Norton Utilities installed make sure you empty your 'Norton Protected Recycle Bin' as well).
Switch back to the Heroes III installer and continue as normal.

Looks like Carl hit it on the head. I posted a vague answer to your post in the mobo forum which was in the right direction. I give myself 4/10

It's not my place to ask (apologies to socalgal), but try to keep a question on one relevant forum, it keeps your answers together.
