    Strategy war games

    Hi all,

I'm a fanatic of historic strategy war games and I,m searching for the top one in this category. I was a big fan of the "Romance of the three kingdom" series on the nintendo and the "PTO (Pacific Theather of Operation" on the same consol. What should I choose for the PC?

Id also recommend Seven Kingdoms and Seven Kingdoms II. While not as 'historic' and more fanatasy, its real fun to play, although with a bit of a learning curve. Another sugestion I have is Civ II...Simply Fantastic game, but Its turn based..but isnt Ro3k turn based too?
well You can look into these...they all have demos i think (not sure about civ 2 but i know 7K has one)

For real-time tactical WW2 stuff I would recommend Micro$oft's Close Combat Series - they have good attention to detail and allow a lot of flexibility in your battle planning. These games are also augmented by good player support sites, with lots of mods, maps, tips etc.

For Napoleonic and US Civil War, Talonsoft's Battleground Series is worth a look at, again they are detailed but these are turn-based and not to everyone's taste. The game engine is also a bit dated now. Like CC, there is good player support/mods etc., including 32bit versions and patches independently released by the games' author.
You could probably get these as budget titles now, at around £10 each.

For real-time Civil War, you can't IMO beat Sid Meier's Gettysburg, again now available on a budget label.

Of course, many people await the medieval-on-yo-*** version of Age of Empires!

"Age of Rifles" is a nice turn-based wargame of late 1700's to late 1800's... by
SSI, a perennial wargame maker. It all depends of what you are looking for in a game.. you didn't give many details. This one you can play in a much shorter amount of time (battles or campaigns) than in games in which you need to build and develop everything first, which I find tedious.
"Steel Panthers I - III are fun too, modern (WWII to present) turn based strategy games with high levels of detail and research.

Both games I mentioned have editors to create your own forces and battles, and to play by email with buddies.

WARNING with games like Civilization, AGe of EMpires, Imperialism, etc.. they are addictive, and you will find yourself staying up until 3AM playing them. Often. Pisses of coworkers, and significant others! hahahahaha Have fun!

Hi all, another really good strategy game that is almost true to real combatis, Tom Clancy's "Rainbow 6". I myself am in the army serving with Rangers and this game is as real as it gets. You can plan out missions and set your teams off and lead one of the teams. the only frustrating thing about it is the AI can get in your way, and that can get you killed at crucial moments. Also, its a first person shoot'em up viewpoint, but playability is very good. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.

    Ed.

Also, another real time WW2 game is Commando, I haven't played it myself, but I heard that it wasn't too bad.

All the "Age of. . ." games are pretty good. Age of Empires, Age of Kings, Age of Mythology. Age of Mythology is the newest one of the series and has an expansion out called "Titans" I think. However, as the title indicates, you're dealing with mainly a lot of mythological type deities and creatures here from Greek / Egyptian / Nordic lore. But you can also create non-mythical run of the mill human type fighters of each race. Each race has a different way they gain favor with their gods and when they gain enough "favor points" in the "favor points pool" you can use these points unleash devestating God-like attacks on your enemies or beneficial "buffs" to your warriors in battle. What miracles you can perform depend on the Gods you choose for your people to worship. You can unleash such things as earthquakes, meteor storms, tornados and other "natural disasters" or you can heal large groups of your troops at once or turn their skin to steel for a duration. All in all a good mix of strategy / tactics / and fantasy that kept me riveted for hours on end.
