I recently started playing quake2 over the modem, and as soon as I connect, I am frozen and unable to move. I can see other people run around, but I can't even talk. My ping keeps growing and growing. Are there any special settings I need for the modem? I am using a Best Data 56FW/VW-PCI modem. My ISP is Erols.

Also, how do people play with pings of approx. 300 ms? I've been spoiled by the LAN at school. 20 ms ping, I love it.
