Flying isn't the answer. I had this problem too. I am using Gravis GRIPs and found that I had to map the up arrow as my forward key. For some reason, the game doesn't see moving forward as climbing. You will find that pressing the up arrow will allow you to climb. Beyond that, you may need to use a joystick that will allow you to assign keyboard commands to the controller (Gravis controllers and Microsoft Sidewinders are the only two I know of that have a keyset manager)

LloydChristmas keep your insults to your self, I did not here anyone say you suck at installing your BF1942, and you cant tell your connection is lagging when you needed help on that matter, this is not a forum for downing people when they come for some help, don’t do it, its immature, and im sure the mods would agree with me. now back to your HL problem you will need to reinstall your game, I have had the same problem with it b4, its a bad installation, one of your files is damaged, I know it sucks, but that’s what I had to do in the end, or get the latest patch even if you have it in already try reinstalling that patch again before installing the whole game again, see if that works for you.

make sure Half-Life is at least v1.0.0.8, because it fixes the ladder problem.
Here's the update: http://www.gamespy3d.com/download/halflife.shtml
Have you tried Adrian's suggestion?

Halflife was the first game that really taught me the importance of the quicksave. Never mind the horde of pods launching themselves at me, I'm worried about getting down that ladder without severing my head.
It's all apart of the challange baby!
