Smile UT full vers match: SysOpt vs. AnandTech

    ---names updated 4/28 7:40am PT

Yep, you read correctly. Team AnandTech (well, actually Jator ) has challenged Team SysOpt to a UT full version match. My guess is that it won't stop at just one.

They have begun gathering support on their side, about 15 people so far. ( http://anandforums.gisystech.com/mes...hreadid=158292 ) The game type is unknown, but it will probably consist of CTF with a possible team deathmatch game tossed in for flavor.

Right now, people confirmed to play are:
    Scott
    myself
    Virus
    RCN_Moose
    MadMatt
    bkehoe
    Sharpy
    Faramir
    eim
    Andre
    oblivion
    InsaneMorphius
    MNX
    Biff
    Onslaught
    bigslammer
    jdsalinger@altavista.com
    CocoPops

    Brydon

Unfortunately, the question of a server is still unknown for sure. Lord Demios from AnandTech might be able to put up a temporary one on a T1, but that's still a maybe. So if anyone can get up a machine runnning UT full version server on a single T1 or better, let us know.

The date and time are also to be worked out. We'll try to make it so the most people that want to can play.

So for all of you that have just been itching to get even with AnandTech for the past year and a half, here's your chance.

    ANANDTECH, PREPARE TO SUICIDE

Here are two threads that reference the match and got it going initially... now, keep everything here. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum7/HTML/000710.html http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum7/HTML/000717.html

So reply if you want to stick it to AnandTech...

    BRING IT ON
(either my vocabulary is quite limited or I just like that phrase )

How much bandwidth (in GB) would hosting a UT game for a weekend take approx? If it isn't too bad, I could try and set up a UT server on my dedicated server (with instructions) which is on a DS3 connection, and I get 220ms pings to with a 56k modem.

The only difficult thing would be uploading the CD contents to it, as I'm on 56k.

Anyway, count me in for whatever server it is going to be on.

    Brendan.

    Sounds like Jay's chickening out.
BTW, I might exempt myself from the tournament. We all know I'm not that good at UT and since I am the fight promotor (Taking the Don King mantle away from Virge), part of my fee for arranging the fight would be an exemption to the qualifying round.
This is sad as Jay's become a bit of a regular around here and represents the face (or text if ya like) of Anand.

Jay don't let the side down, show up and be blown down.

    Sharpy,

No not chickening out. Just trying to give myself an automatic bid without haveing to go through the qualifying rounds.

LD should also get a bye as he would be hosting the site, other than that, I'd say open it up to everyone.

    Jay

bkehoe: The bandwidth is proportional to the number of users in the game. I believe you need about 4K/s per user (I could be off by a K or two). So, for an optimal scenario, lets say we have 20 participants playing CTF for 60 minutes. That's about 288MB of bandwidth. Adjust that number accordingly for fewer players or length of gameplay.

It would be best to use the latest as any user already there would have a hard time reverting back to an older version (ie uninstall /reinstall).

    Jay

P.S. Joe, stop by the irc room around 10:30 Wed. night if you can, we are going to be meeting to work out some detils and a rep from your team would be helpful.

actually, the version really doesn't matter much since all final release client versions can connect to all final release server versions. I'll be using 4.13, personally.

Ok, I might be there, depending on the time zone you're talking about. (Mountain time would be best for me )
