seti@home

I saw a G3/350 running seti@home at compUSA
the other day and that thing was flying!Looks
like it would do a data unit in <10hrs.I have
a PII450 and it takes about 23hrs.+.What's
going on?About how many RC5 blocks should I
be able to do in 24hrs?

Alot of the slow down is due to windows. I have a triple bootable celeron overclocked to 500 mhz. In 98 and NT it takes about twenty hours per block, but in Linux it processes blocks in 8 to 9 hours. Be glad you don't have an AMD chip, the seti code isn't optimized for them and it took me over forty hours per block on a k62 450.

Any time an Apple is running something fast, you are almost guaranteed the fault for the PCs lack of speed is Windows.

Could someone tell me how to install and run Seti@home on RH 6.0? I just installed RH and I have no idea what I'm doin' yet. I've tried most of the morning and half the afternoon to figure out how to get Seti@home going.

Also, I'm using 2 celrons in a Abit BP6. Can anyone tell me how to make sure that RH recognizes both CPU's and what to do if it doesn't? The system monitor only shows one CPU. The weird thing is that it shows Seti@home running 3 different times but I don't see the application like in windows.

I'm soOOOo confused.

Thx in advance for your help.

First download the approiate client for your version of Linux, and then change to the directory where you downloaded it to and type tar xvf *.tar this should uncompress the files. Next change into the directory you just created while untarring and type ./setiathome. This should start the client. You should also be online or on a network when you do this because the client needs to connect to the seti server. hope this helps

Thank you! It worked. Now if I could figure out how to use both CPUs, I'd be in business.

There might be a better way to get seti to use both processors, I am not sure. I have heard of people installing two clients in seperate directories and entering the same user info for both. Then start both clients and both processors should be utilized.I have never done this, but it should work.

Three thank you's. I must o' studdered. But I ment each one

That's exactly what I did. Two clients running in seperate directories using the same user info. I just don't know how to tell if both CPU's are working. Only one shows in the system information. Hmm. I guess I'll figure it out eventually.

Thanks again for your reply!!

So how do you like RH 6.0, want to get it but doesnt' support USB. Thinking of building another computer and run duel somethings. Pretty much what I can afford. Any ideas out there for a duel MB that is good for this dream idea?

I am also thinking of stopping the rc5 and run the seti. Seems seti is a better cause in the long run.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I heard that there were so many people processing seti data that they couldn't keep up and were sending out blocks that had already been processed just to keep people happy.I also heard that the seti code could be optimized for different processors, especially amd, cutting processing time almost in half, but they won't let anyone do it. This is why I switched to rc5. Can anybody confirm this?

bdog - do you remember where you heard about Seti reprocessing blocks?

I wonder how we could find out if that's true?

go to this url from the seti@home page:
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/faq.html#q3.11
read the top "FAQ". it basically says that if they get too many people requesting blocks than there are available, they will redistribute the same blocks. whether they have reached this point or not already, i dont know....
