It basically means what it says.
DES is only run about once a year, the last one was at the start of this year. The reason they are only run once a year is because they are very quick to finish - the last one only ran for 23 hours.
However, RC5 is the long term contest, and has been running for almost 2 years now, and is only 11% complete.
If there is a DES contest (next will bs DES IV - if I got my roman numerals right) the client will stop cracking RC5, will download some DES blocks and crack them. The DES keyrate will be higher, and blocks will be completed quickly, as they are only 56-bit encryption, and DES uses MMX more than RC5.

Basically DES has a higher proirity then RC5 so the client checks to see if there is a DES contest open, before it starts cracking RC5.
On the newer clients you should also see OGR and CSC mentioned. They are other contests that D.net is involved in.
I see that you are not using the team pproxy. Goto http://24.72.9.177/ to see what it is all about.
It is basically a way to see updated stats every half hour with just your fellow team members. To use it all you have to do is change the clients to use 24.72.9.177 as the default keyserver. Then set the port to 8080. If you use the GUI version, select nerver fallback.
The next half hour stats run after you submit your first blocks. You should appear on the stats at http://24.72.9.177/byemail.php .
I also see you are into car audio. Do you consider yourself an audiophile or a basshead? I would be interested in some stats..I mean info on what you use and how you like it.

DES closed?
I was looking at the launch or my cracker, and saw this:
[Aug 31 16:09:21 UTC] Connecting to distributed.net 209.98.32.14:2064...
[Aug 31 16:09:23 UTC] Proxy Notification: DES contest is closed.
[Aug 31 16:09:24 UTC] The keyserver says: "I refuse to let you play me for
the fool. (dbaker)"
What does it mean DES is closed?

I nearly al;ways get a "Page cannot be displayed" message when I try to post.
Refreshing brings everything right. I put it down to IE5, as it sometimes tells me a file can't be found on a server, and it I start a new window it can.
