One for the gurus.
I have a win98 machine which has been acting as an internet server for a small network, 5 machines. Got an ADSL USB modem, worst kind I know.
The thing has been fine for 3 months, the occasional dropout. Two weeks ago, the machine started getting really flaky and hanging lots. I use AnalogX proxy and Zonealarm as protection. When Zonealarm is running and I access the internet the machine grinds to a halt with web pages taking up to a minute to load. Shutdown Zonealarm and things are fine again, fast surfing no problem.
I have no virii, or trojans I can find.
On upgrading to version 2.6 of ZA things got worse and I have just been forced into a reinstall over the top of Win98. All seemed to go well, I set up another machine with the internet connection. When I now try and browse the internet on this machine it comes up with the trusty dns error page. I can ping the new server, I can see all files and machines on the network, the other machines can see this one. TCP/IP is set exactly as it was before the reinstall. I have removed the TCP/IP protocol, and the network card, to no avail.
I am now pulling my hair out, what am I doing wrong.
TIA

Are all the machines giving this DNS error after the reinstall or just the one machine?
Was the reinstall on the machine with the USB modem?

Sorry confused you a bit.
The original server machine had 98 reinstalled and then pointed to the replacement proxy ip address.
The replacement has got the correct IP and usb modem, and all other machines are having no problems.
I changed the IP of the server on reinstall to save having to change the other machines proxy settings.
Now the reinstalled PC is getting the DNS errors.

ok, so the reinstalled machine is getting the errors while the other 5 machines are surfing fine?
Under Internet options, did you check the LAN settings for the correct Proxy entries?
The correct entries is to NOT have any proxy settings for the "gateway" machine

Yep the gateway is free of proxy settings.
The reinstalled machine has got the use a proxy server ticked with the IP address correct. Oh yes OE5 isn't working either, similar problem,
"A TCP/IP error occurred while trying to connect to the server blah blah!."
I have changed no settings in IE or OE following the reinstall and all was working correctly before.
Do I need anything else in the Network properties section.
Network card Realtek RTL8029 NIC
IPX/SPX
NETBUI
TCP/IP
TCP/IP settings
IP is 192.168.0.25 (server 192.168.0.200)
Sub 255.255.255.0 (same as rest)
Disable WINS
No Gateway
Disable DNS
Binding to Client and File and Printer
Anything else you need

I thought I was ok, but apparently I'm not. Whats the difference between the "gateway" machine and the "Server"?
-
Sorry for Server read gateway.
The machine that is currently in use as the Gateway/server is not the one that I reinstalled.
Gateway in the last post was referring to network settings.
Not an internet gateway.
Sorry for the confusion

Point the "gateway" entry tab to point to the Ip of the Internet Server
Actually I am VERY lost on this thread, Perhaps someone else can decipher what you have and where to go next...Sorry
Michael
