    Angry Network Ping problems

The client is connected to the network, can send/receive e-mail, can map the file server and nt server, can see all of the right computers on the network, but is unable to ping them from the MS-DOS window. Why is that? Every other function is working as it should. Also, in network neighborhood, it's denied access to the shared drives/folders on other computers that should be available. Any ideas?? Seems like something simple I'm just overlooking.

What protocol(s) are you running on your network?

We have an NT server and a Novell file server, so we've got IPX/SPX and TCP/IP running. Some systems have NetBEUI installed also. Hmmm...do you think that could be it? NetBEUI?

i don't think that netbeui is causing your problem. what exactly happens when you try the ping command, whether it be a loopback ping or a ping to the server?

I get the response that the host is unreachable. I didn't set this network up (the guy that did isn't available to contact at all), and there are things that were done here that have me and two other people (both of whom have their MCSE's and I'm halfway done with mine) scratching our heads. And this kind of stuff frustrates me to no end.

    Cool

By chance is the NT server handling DCHP services for the network? If so are the machines that you are having problems with setup to "authenticate" to the NT server? How big is the network? (how many machines and what type are they primarily?)

ahh, might as well help out on this one.. since it may seem like a tough one..

well for one thing I need to know the client is it an NT workstation or a 9X box?.. okay since you get destination unreachable. it can be caused by incorrect tcp/ip settings.. and/or you do NOT have tcp/ip as your default protocol. Plus do you have two accounts database, because you have a NT and novell environment or are all accounts on NT server?.. well I bests not say no more, or it will become assumptions.

Since you can still have connectivity using your other protocols, are you sure you have the proper IP settings? Host unreachable usually means the IP you are trying to ping does not have the same network ID that you do. Other reasons for it as well, but that could be it, and you are using IPX for your apps.

Y'all are a huge help. It was a simple TCP/IP problem. I feel like a HUGE dumbass! I forgot to put the IP address in there.

Glad your problem is solved, but it kinda scares me that two MCSE's didn't know at your company.

    Your Welcome.
