Thumbs down Crossover cable doesnt work.

I build a crossover cable crossing over the pairs..

    1 to 3
    2 to 6
    3 to 1
    6 to 2

The green leds on both cards turn on and they blink when I try to do a ping to the other PC.

The ping to the remote machine always fail but the pi9ng to the machine itself works fine. I also installed the IPX/SPX protocol but the computers dosn't comunicate with each other.

What is wrong? The crossover cable or the NICS?

    Please help me out!!

    Thanks in advance

Thanks for the address but that is what I did and it doesn't work.

I guess that the NICS are bad. Thanks anyway for your help

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the nics are bad until you try another cable. Do you have access to a cable tester that can do crossovers?
I'm not sure about the numbers but i use:
    white-orange
    orange
    white-blue
    white-brown
    green blue
    white-blue
on one end and the starndard:
    white-green
    green
    white-orange
    blue
    white-blue
    orange
    white-brown
    brown
    on the other end.

That is what I did. The NICs leds turn on and flashes whenever I try to do a ping to the other PC but the ping fails.

The TCP/IP protocol is installed and each PC has an unique IP address and an Unique name. They are under the same workgroup too.

I donīt know what to do.

    Thanks anyway

    On the other end:
    white-orange
    orange
    white-green

Well i'm not sure 'bout your colours but i know mine definately works. You really need access to a tester. You can still have link lights come on your NICS when you have the wrong wiring. Try using NetBeui as your only protocol because it always works and needs no configuration. That'll tell you if your set up is working then you can go on to TCP/IP once you find out what the prob is.
    Tell me what happens!

Ok Raf. I can see that you are getting frustrated at the answers that you are getting. I am Your cable may be bad that is one answer. Try another proticol like netbeui. This will help the comps to "see" one another. If you can ping one machine but not the other that says that the cable is wroking and that the nics are working. At least somewhat. Try and "find" the comps in net neihborhood. Right click and so forth. If you can see them that way that says that you can at least get on the network and that the nics Are working and the cable is working. But if you have access to another cable try that or if it is easyer to have access to another network take your crossover cable there. You have the configuration right. I just use the 4 colored cables don't want the whites to get in the way so I cut them. Since in an ethernet environment you don't use them anyway. But you are right 1<->3 2<->6 on one end of the cable. I have had cables be bad and the lights on the nics be on. More than 80% of all network troubles come from the wire.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help but you have to try some of these get back with me let me know so I can help out some more ok?
I won't just give you the same answer 3 times in a row
