make sure you are using a common protocol and under identification tab u are in the same workgroup
-
Also make sure that file and print sharing has been selected & you must then have something on each system listed as a share in order for it to be viewed. You should at least be able to view each system if they are all in the same workgroup and are all using client for microsoft networks as a primary login.

MS networking - Win98
I am using Microsoft Network and have checked out the "troubleshooting" wizard for Win 98 networking. I see the "Entire Nework" icon and the name of the given computer but cannot see other computer(s). Is there some place where I need to list all the computers on the network so that a computer can see the other computers on the network?

What happens when you double click the 'entire network' icon? Do you get the 'unable to browse the network' error? Need to make sure you have the same protocoil on both machines and if you are using IPX/SPX compatible the frame types must be the same for each machine. 802.3 is a good one. This is under the properties for IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol->"your NIC". Enable Netbios over IPX/SPX.Leave everything else alone. Under file and print sharing properties change the value for Browse Master for ONE of the machines to enabled to speed up boot.OK your way out and reboot. Should work now.Don't forget the other advice above regarding the ID tab.To share a drive right click its icon in my computer and select 'sharing'. Share the drive or a subfolder or whatever. If you don't share there is nothing to see even if you can see the other machine. Hope this helps.

Forget about IPX unless you play games that need it. If you have a small LAN, simply use NETBUI. Very fast but not routable, which you would not need on a small lan. If you use the internet, obviously you will need TCP/IP. You do not have to have a volume shared to see another computer. If you right click on Network Neighborhood or find from the Start Menu, simply type in the name of the computer you are looking for. If no files or directories are shared on the PC there will be nothing to look at but the computer name will show up. Network Neighborhood is flaky. Usually if you have FIle and printer sharing on and Netbui loaded the other computers will show up.

You might try using the Find Computer to see if it can find the other machine.
In File Explorer under the "Tools" menu choose "Find" then "Computer".

Seems like improper i.p. assigning or subnet mask.

Are you using Win98SE? I have a network that won't talk either and I am wondering if 98SE is the problem.
See http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum6/HTML/000131.html
I have been running a network where both systems were using Win98 and everything talked fine. A couple of days ago I put Win98SE on one of the systems and I cannot get the two systems to see each other. I am at a loss on this one.

My network is up!! I downloaded the newest drivers for my ethernet card and it worked. Win98SE already has drivers for my ethernet card on the CD and they didn't do the trick. I also put in the 95 drivers that came with my card and still no dice. After putting in the new drivers it worked immediately. I was using the 95 drivers for the original Win98 and things worked great. Win98SE must be a little more sensitive for some reason.

There's also a known problem where win98/98se boxes can't see each other or any other windows comps...
If you've configured both to use netbeui, same workgroup name, file and print installed and shared at least one folder (on both), you should be able to see each other. You can check this via Start->Run-> \\<computername> OR Start->Find->Computers.
Remember, browsing the Network Neighborhood in Windows 9x does NOT always work. I'm certified and teach this, trust me.
