Peer to peer networking with cable modem

I was wondering how it is possible to setup a
peer to peer 10BASET network with a cable modem. The thing is, everyone say that you need to assign a ip address for each machine. The big problem is that a cable modem uses DHCP to get the ip address. The other machines on the network can have their ip address assigned...but what about the computer that has the cable modem plugged to.

Anyway, if anyone have some ideas how to setup that kind of network, well I would like to know [img]/forum/smile.gif[/img]

Overall:
2 computers (1 network card in each computer)
1 hub (5 ports Ethernet)
1 cable modem.

Guys don't just tell me to use Wingate, and that's it. I want to know how to setup the ip addresses to have a LAN (each computer has access to the other: file sharing) and an access for both computer to the Internet(cable modem).

Just go to this website and it will explain it all very simply.You'll be up and running within 5-10minutes. By the way, you do not need to use a hub if you are connecting just two computers...all you need are the lan cards and a "crossover cable" which you can buy at any computer supply house for a few dollars. By the way, you'll need to install two lan cards in the "server"...one for the cable modem, and one for the netwrk.

Ok the easist way to do it. Even easier than gong to another site!
Put your cable modem into the uplink port of the hub. Generally the last port like port 5 on yours. Also there should be a switch on it. Then you plug in both of your computers into that hub. And you can just set up both computers like the one was on the cable modem. You shouldn't have an IP address in either machine. Let the cable co do this for both machines. And then for your internal network have a netbeui protocol installed on both machines. This should do it for ya. Does for me.

Oh and you will need a hub for 2 PC's if you want a cable modem. Or you could just buy another NIC in one machine. That way is too expensive and cumbersome. I like this way a lot better. Because if you add more comps you can play games online as well as on a LAN. Sweet
