Problems with cable modem

I dont't get as good speeds with my cable modem as my friend who lives down the street. He gets great speeds from the netscape ftp while I dont get as good. I get about 80 k /s tops while he claims he can download a 17 meg file from it in under a minute. My cable modem is setup correctly and I have a much better comp then him. What could be wrong and what should i do? I have a motorola cable modem and an smc ether ez ethernet card. If you can help please reply.

make sure that he is actually getting this 17meg file in under a min. If this is true then there is something great about his connection. 80 kb/s is about normal. Sometimes (usually) it is the site that you are getting it from too. (the file that is). Yours sounds about right.

Nice reply Bc...try hitting submit once instead of 5 or 6 times
Chad: like I replied to Yoda's message...maybe your network card is to blame? I think that card you are using uses a RealTek 8019as (if its ISA) or a 8029as(if its PCI). I have seen MANY of these cards die. Hrmm..well SMC also makes thier own chips for NICs too. But, I have seen those die as well....in fact I used to own an SMC called an ether-16. Try a 3com NIC or a NetGear NIC. I have both of those running 1/2 the machines on my 20 computer network and no problems yet. if you check out www.pricewatch.com they have em both for around $30 or so I think.

Lets do some simple math...

The typically advertised maximum tranfer for a cable modem is 1.5Mbps .. Lets assume for a second, you actually GET that (Ha! Right!)

17MB / 60 seconds = approx 290K /sec

1.5Mbps = approx 187.5K / sec

So that means... to get that 17MB file in under a minute, your friend would not only have to sustain the maximum allowed tranfer rate.. but EXCEED it by close to 50% .....

I want what ever cable service HE has.

Realistically though... you really should expect average transfers around 30-80K/sec with an occational 100+K/sec assuming no set caps by your cable company (I believe @home recently set a speed cap) and a fast site on the other end.

I'm sorry about the additional postings. I'm still getting use to IE 5.0 and this site. I didn't realize it was doing multi-postings.
Thanks!
