simple really..just two computers hooked up?
I was wanting to know (as I have little knowledge of networking) what i would need in order to connect two Windows 95 PCs just so that I can transfer files from one to another and maybe play the odd game. Thanks

Simple really , In theory.
Two network cards ( about $25 au)
one coax or :
one rj45 crossover cable

definitely go rj45 and get pci nic cards
then you will banish the dreaded irq
problems inherent with isa

Go bnc (coax) this is fast enough for 5 to 10 machines in a non business enviroment, very easy to extend should you need to add more machines at a later date and if the cards are plug and play (which even most modern ISA cards are) then you will have minimal resource problems. This will still be easily quick enough for network gaming such as quake

BNC and RJ-45 don't really make a difference in speed for 2 computers. I would personally go for two PCI 10/100MB network cards. (Generics like D-Link, or my fave 'cheap card Netgear) and connect them with a crossover cable. You get 100MB speed right now, its easier to setup, and expandable to current technology later instead of limiting you to 10MB as BNC would. I ran BNC for a long time because I was too cheap to buy a hub, and I already had the cable and terminators, but I would not recommend it for a newbie. Two NICs and a crossover cable is dead simple to setup, so all you have to worry about is drivers, which is plenty.

800XL is on the money. Coax might trip you up and is too slow anyway. 2 10/100 NIC's (Network Interface Cards) and a crossover. Easy and fast. Should be around a hundred bucks. Could be more depending on brand and where you buy them, but I would not pay much more.
