is it possible to network 2 computer without a hub?

I just got my second computer at home and planning to network them. Is it possible to
network them without a hub? Can I just do it with 2 network cards and a network cable?

You need to use a special patch cable, i believe. the wiring in it is different

Just make sure the cable is of the crossover type, you can get them at Compusa, Best Buy, any computer store. Use Netbui, for your protocol, it's fast and easy to set up.

Titan, I am using NETbuie. Is this the only protocal required? I am ready to pull my hair out.

I have a new ASUS P2B motherboard with a on-board NIC. I had it working with a crossover cable for two weeks, using both IPX/SPX and NETbuie. It stoped working, and I have been trying to get it working again for a month. I have a LinkSys card in my other machine and added a LinkSys hub. May have a problem with the motherboard but have had one replacement board(which looked like it had been used my someone) that did not fix the problem. I see comments like your's "it's fast and easy to set up" and I say WHERE DID I GO WRONG!!!.

How, or who should I turn to that couls truly test the on-board NIC? Any suggentions?

how to make a crossover cable:
one end (standard)
O/W O G/W Bl Bl/W G Br/W Br

other end (crossover)
G/W G O/W Br/W Br O Bl Bl/W

use ALL of your available protocols, especially if you are using a proxy.

JimmyCW...make sure you have the latest version of VREDIR.VXD...did you disable the on-board and try an add-on?

Guys, thanks for the ideas and input. You will be glad(or at least I am) to know I got things working last night. Turns out it was two bad motherboards in a row. Both had bad NICs onboard. When I put the third ASUS P2B-LS (a down lvevl board, from the first two by the way) in the machine the network came right up and worked from powerup. I had changed a number of thing per everyones input, and from book and magazines I had read in the last three weeks. I am please that everyone had me going in the correct direction.

If you want to jerk someone around this is the way to do it....two bad boards in a row and the first time I ever tried to get even a simple peer to peer connection working. If I had not worked on lots of other types of equipment(not PC) in the field I am sure I would have given up some time ago.
