Speed problem
I have 2 computers one at work one at home they both use dail up networking to access our server in a different location. The work puter seems to work well it has P11 300, 64mg sdram, kingstonfast ethernet adapter (not sure weather this does anything as nothing is connected to it) on a intel SE440BX motherboard and runs NT4.
Home which I have just upgraded to a P11 400, 64meg sdram on a Abit bx6 v2 M/board it runs win98 both use the same brand and model modem U.S. Robotics 56K. the home puter is alot slower on the network
I have bought the work one home this weekend to test them. The home one also seems slower alround
Anyone got any suggestions where I should start on this problem

First off I would check the setting of the modem properties in the system device manager. Under connection/port settings make sure that the recieve buffer is set to the highest setting.

Thanks SterlingA I pushed it up to the max and I also changed the port setting bit per second from 9600 to 57600 hope that was the right thing to do. but there was not noticable differance
I did a few tests Loading up word and other programs from thier own hard drive and my work p11 300 if definetly faster so what could be slowing the p11 400 down could it be the os, is NT4 faster than Win98?

This is definately something that you don't want to hear but sometimes the only way to fix the disparity is to reinstall the OS in the slow machine.
Microsoft operating systems have a tendancy to just screw up over time all by themselves. It used to be *.dll files got corrupted over time, now it is also the registry. Kind of a double whammy.
This may not be the problem with your system, but it is one of the many things people have done in the past that fixed that problem.
Other than what was already suggested, you might want to see if there are any programs running in the background that are eating up a lot of CPU time. That will slow some systems down a bit.

I only loaded Win98 last week and right from the start it was 2 to 3 sec slower to load word with nothing else running
I'm thinking I may not have configerd the bios properly and I'm not getting the best out of the board and cpu as it was my first upgrade I've done my self
The only thing I changed in the bios was the the cpu speed to 400 and left everything else as the defult
