if the NIC interferes with another piece of hardware (irq, address, etc), it might mess up windows depending on what the conflict is.

removing the NIC should bring things back to normal if this was the case.

Ok but would that still happen after it was working fine for a while(about 2 weeks)?

you mean the system was working fine with the NIC for awhile, then it started crashing?

that might happen if you change the configuration after the NIC installation. can you trace any changes to the system just before the crashing started? any new devices or new software installed?

it could also be a virus or some random failure of some component (hard or soft).

I just had a problem that might be similar to yours. I installed a new netgear nic to my primary system. Everything appeared to run just fine until I tried to run Norton Utils.

Everytime you try to fire up Norton to run a defrag the system would hang. The only way to fix it was to disable the nic, run Norton, then re-enable the nic.

I swapped out the netgear nic for a different brand card and everything runs fine now. Apparently some nics have a problem running at a certain irq setting?
