I bought a Linksys Network in a box and it was very easy to set up. It came with a 5 port hub so I can hook up other computers later. I think it was only $75 which I thought was pretty good.

Ryan, it quite to set up a Peer to Peer network (LAN). You need 2 nic card, cable to connect those 2 boxes, either rj-45 (phone type cable or Coax). Once both pc detected the card install protocol mainly tcp and netbeui and give a IP address and submask address. You can do this by going to proprieties of Netwk Neighborhood.
godd luck.

Ryan,
I think kgb forgot to mention that in a Peer to Peer LAN the RJ-45 cable has to be crosswired. You can buy them like this or any computer store that sets up LANs can make one up.
Also, another advantage, as you may know, to a home network is that all machines can access the internet at the same time through 1 isp. Additional software like Nat32, Wingate, Sygate, NShare is required.
About your printer - are you sure that it can't be shared? I have a 720C, and had it sharing through my LAN. After that I made some changes (with my protocols) and am now having problems, but it was sharing for a while there. Need to fiddle with some more.
Good Luck,
Tony

Do you plan to have other computers on your network in the future? How many?
How far appart are the computers? Will it be easy to run wiring from one to another?
The Netgear Network Starter kit was a PC Magazine editor's choice. It comes with everything you need to network your two computers and the 4 port hub allows you to add an additional 2 computers by buying a cable and network card for each.

Just to follow up. RJ45 is not a telephone type cable. RJ45 is a connector. PC's use RJ45 connnectors and CAT 5 cable. Telephones use RJ11 connectors and telephone cables. The cable you will need is Cat 5 cable. You can use a crossover without a hub or regular Cat 5 with both PC's plugged into a hub. Obviously both PC's will need a NIC (Network Interface Card).
