Alton M577 OS problem.

I can only run win95 without any problem. When I try to load win 98 it will run for a while and the just reboot like someone hit the reset switch … And when I loaded NT 4.0 server on it I still had problems with it erring and locking up, not to mention that it the bios will not run the NTFS file system. I contacted the manufacturer about the problems and they gave me a new Bios patch and told me that it will fix the problem. The patch only solved some minor Windows 95 problems but still resets when the Windows 95 system is loaded and running, although I did notice it dues not reboot as often now. The board use to reboot once every 2 minutes but now it may run for about 10 min till it reboots. You don’t even have to be doing anything for it to reboot… it will do it when it idle without anything running in windows. It has a Cyrix MII-333 CPU. Has anyone else had the same problem?

I'll bet your problem is elsewhere. Memory maybe. Posting from a M577 board that has run Win 98 without problems/rebooting for a loooong time now...

The M577 in itself doesn't have an inherent problem with 98 or NT. At work, we're using dozens of them, all running NT, all day.

We did however have a bad batch of MII-333 2.9V 83 MHz 3.0x that wouldn't run stably on any mainboard. These were the older, IBM made, revision 8.1 MII with the mushroom-like heat spreader. Maybe you have one of those. I found that, on the M577, these run better at the same 250 MHz but 2.5x 100 MHz - yet they never are perfectly stable.

Definately could be a cpu problem. Also make sure you have a recent BIOS.

Thanks I will try to change the CPU on the motherboard and see if that will do it.. I was thinking that might the cpu but the tech. support person would not do anything about the cpu. thanks for the info.
