HELP! -- WIN98 and VA 503+

I've got a new VA 503+ (rev 1.2A w/the newest bios - 1.15JE33) and I can't install WIN98. WIN95B is fine. I've referenced the WIN98 Resource Kit manual and read all of the issues at www.fic.com.tw. It always crashes after the final reboot with "error initializing device CONFIGMG:" "Windows Protection Error" "You need to restart your computer" If I attempt another setup it just thinks that everything is OK and starts from scratch rather than "Safe Recovery." It doesn't matter if it's a clean install or an upgrade. I've tried an AGP and an ISA video card and two hard drives. I've also tried installing with just the video card mounted. Any ideas?

Wat CPU are u using??? If its a K6-2 350 and above , u need to download a patch form AMD website.

I'm aware of the patch but it's a K6-2 300. This bios reserves IRQ 5 and there's a miniport driver you have to add after installation, but I'm wondering if I need to do it beforehand. Well, here goes a couple more blissful hours trying something else. Thanks anyway.
