How to get a Cyrix MII to run on an older board at the correct speed:

    1. Read what's printed on the MII. The voltages, and, with Cyrix CPUs, bus clock and multiplier are written onto it in plain text.

    2. Do these settings on your motherboard. (Note: 3.5x multiplier uses the same setting as was 1.5x with older CPUs).

2a. Check that these settings have been done correctly.

    3. Check if the CPU _type_ displayed is correct. Ignore the displayed speed and rating - most BIOS are limited in their identification knowledge when it comes to CPUs that came out after that particular BIOS was released. Don't worry if a Cyrix MII is displayed as a 6x86MX - same thing, new name.

    4. Use some tool software, like c't CTCM.EXE, to measure actual CPU clock. The clock measured should match the bus clock and multiplier you set, _not_ the rating printed on the chip. Example: A Cyrix MII-300 "66 MHz bus 3.5" should measure at 233 MHz. (You need CTCM v1.6L or older with Cyrix, newer ones have a bug that makes it refuse to run on those processors.)

Did that recently on an even older PC-Chips M560. Stuck an MII-333 (83 MHz 3.0x) in, set to 2.9V, 83 MHz, 3.0x. Boot screen says it's a 6x86MX-PR266, but all tools display 250 MHz, which equals 83.3 x 3.0, so everything's fine and dandy.

    Hi again!

Thought you might find this useful (from www.amptron.com, section "BIOS"):

PM9600 BIOS REVISION FILE NAME: 960115.zip
    RELEASE DATE: 01/15/99
This file will also upgrade your AMI bios to give your board support for the AMD K6-266, AMD K6 2-266/300/333/366 (@66MHz), IDT Winchip 2 & Cyrix M2.

To all PC-Chips-and-affiliates-bashers: So much for poor support of older boards ...

    Regards, Peter
