Microwave and Sump Pump screwing up monitor!!

Everytime the sump pump turns on, or someone turns the microwave on, the display on my monitor shakes/vibrates a bit. The microwave and sump pump aren't anywhere close to my monitor, my monitor IS plugged in to a surge protector, which has some kind of a filter, and my monitor degausses automatically every time I turn it on. Anyone know why this happens?

I don't know why it degausses automatically,but your other problem sounds like a power(AC voltage)drop.Try another AC circuit that's not connected to the pump/microwave.Use an extension cord if it's too far away.Also,check the wall receptical your using now for loose wires.

Hey dawgtuff: All newer monitors do an auto degauss at power on. Only the olders ones require a manual degauss.

I would spend $40 and get a top of the line power strip with circuit protection. This should eliminate any spikes/brown-outs, or interference from your appliances.

Also try another outlet.....most houses receive 2 phases into their electrical box in order to make 220V for the big stuff. If you make sure the microwave and sump are on one phase and then your computer equiptment is on the other then the noise will be dramatically reduced. One possible quick way to tell is by looking in your electrical panel. If you have two rows of breakers then one row is one phase and the other row is the other phase (about 50% chance - some panels only have 'one row' and the phase 'split' is handled differently). If you notice the microwave and sump on the same row as your compluter then try moving the computer breaker to the other side/phase. You may want to get an electritian to do this since it involves working with live wires. (Please don't zap yourself ). It's a simple process of moving breakers, so don't let them charge a lot.

The electrical panel does have 2 rows. Cadetstimpy, how can I tell what phase the sump pump and microwave are on?

And does anyone know whether or not this kind of behavior (sreen vibrates/shakes) damages a monitor?

Plug in the Microwave and toss it into the sump pump hole, Your moniter probs will go away

I got an eletric fan and when I put it closer to the monitor the same thing happens. I think it's caused by the electrical field that the engine produces, the same thing may be happening to you.
is there a wall or something between you oven and your monitor?

Tossing the microwave into the sump pump basin would solve my problem... hmm...

My monitor is on the other side of the house... nowhere near the microwave or sump...
