    64MB Savage 2000 AGP -- Any good?

www.compgeeks.com has this card on sale for 66.00 bucks and I was thinking of getting it for a machine that I would have in part playing DVD's on my TV. Does anyone know if this is a good card for DVD playback?

Well, I guess I'm the only righteous man here ...
Dude, I've never seen this card, but I don't like S3 Savage family at all, still looking for stable and fast drivers for Savage4

For a little more that 66$ (another 30$) you can get GeForce2 MX 32MB, which plays DVDs just fine.
More that this, year and a half ago I enjoed DVDs with ATI Rage IIc PCI with only 4MB of EDO memory

    Best regards ...

Ditto what ND said. S3 no longer supports the savage series after selling their graphics business to VIA. The card itself is a decent performer, but the drivers stink big time. Stay FAR away from it.

If you're looking for a sub-$100 card, go with either the Radeon LE or the GF2MX. You can't go wrong with either choice.

I have installed a Viper II (Savage2000 32MB)about..2 years ago?

It worked fine on what few things I tryed it on...no major gripes. However the system I built also had a seperate Hardware DVD decoder, so I dont know how the Savage's DVD capability would have been.

I completely concur with these guys - Dont buy a video card for a company whos essentially 'givin' up' on thier video line.

Get a GF2MX w/ Video out (the bonus is that the GF2MX line uses Twinview, meaning you can output to screen and TV simultaneously).
It's worth the few bucks more - Better drivers, performs better than the Savage2000, and the company still cares about thier video cards. 32MB is plenty for this card, and getting the 64MB version is a waste - Actually I believe the extra 32MB for the Savage2000 is also a waste, but my fellow members here have already discussed why you shouldnt even consider the Savage2k.

The LE has no Video out so thats out of the question for you.

Be aware that there is a Geforce2 MX 200 out there, which is worse than the Original Geforce2 MX. The Geforce2 MX 400 is slightly better, but not worth a few extra bucks

I suggest either the Abit Siluro with TVOut http://www.axiontech.com/cgi-local/p...t=VIABGF256MXT

    The AOpen with TVOut http://direct.mwave.com/mwave/ProdVI...RDS-AOPEN.hmx?

Or the Leadtek with TV Out, that has a fan that the others dont http://www.essencom.com/parts/VG_LEADTEK.htm

I have the viper 2 32 MB, and i wouldn't recommend it for playing games but according to all the reviews i read the dvd performance and quality is pretty good (i haven't tried it myself though). If you're gonna use it just for playing dvd's i don't think it would be a bad choice.

Get the MX. It can be had for under $70 now is you look around. Or get the KyroII for just over $100. Don't bother with Savage anything.
