I had similar problems with a K6-2 500 & a TNT2 so if you post more details I will try and help.
Here are some ideas:
Use detonators instead of manufacturer drivers.
Install latest AGP patch, if using via based motherboard.
Make sure AGP vid card is selected in BIOS.
Turn of write cache pipeline in BIOS.
Set AGP to 1X in BIOS.
Are you running 98 or 95?
Good luck

Thankyou for all your help, I will try as suggested. I had looked at those write ups at tweak3d but will go over them again.
I have just installed the latest agp drivers for my Ali v chipset, but haven't tried detornator drivers yet. I am using Win98 SE

Put in latest detonator2 drivers. Still no luck. Tried all suggestions in tweak3d article. Still no luck.
Any opengl game runs perfectly, as soon as it trys to run a Direct3d game it locks up on the first bit of Directx code, even if it is a menu that has been written for direct3d. Although the Direct X diag test on the 3D rendering cube runs fine.
I think I should buy a new motherboard with an Eppox chipset and a Celeron 500, what do you guys think. I am pretty sure it is a combination of my cheap motherbaord (Redfox, is it good?) and chipset?? I hav had enough none the less. Please last try to fix this before I trade the lot in and go Intel Celeron!!
