Methane..... I must say that I was looking at that same video card just a few minutes ago, along side the G400Max, and a V3 3000 PCI. I was originally just going to the store to pick up the ASUS 6800 DDR Pure, but asked the salesperson if I could see the aforementioned video cards side by side. To my amazement, he did as I requested. Hooked em all up, ran UT and Q3 benches, as well as some superkool 2d/3d demos. I was totally impressed with the G400Max. Kickes the **** outta my v3 3000. So I am now a proud owner of the Matrox G400 Max. Honestly, I did'nt see anything super about the ASUS 6800. Sure it was fast, but was'nt as pretty as the G400 Max, and for 2D, there is nothing faster..... from what I hear anyway. I am at work right now, and cant wait to go home and install that sukka

I have the ASUS V6800 DDR and am very happy with it. I was in the same position a few days ago. I'm with morphius on the 2D speed, but for 3D gaming the geForce is the fastest and the visual apperance diffs. isn't that noticable. I think what impresses most people about the G400Max is the enviornmental bumpmapping Demo that's written specifically for the max. The ASUS comes with a tweaking program, a program that monitors fan speed and chip temps.(I recommend getting the updated version from thier web site), a demo disk of games, full version of Rollcage and Drakan. I had both the G400Max and the ASUS card in my machine at diff. times and I posted my 3DMark2K benchmarks under the post "Help me choose". I'm getting 50-55fps in UT @ 1024*768*32. Hope this helps.

    P.S. There is a review of the ASUS V6800 @ www.anandtech.com

Spence, did'nt mean to sound argumentative at all. Hope you did'nt take it that way, as I stated that I really appreciated your comments. I just thought that the G400Max looked better, but I have not seen that Matrox demo yet (enviromental bump mapping), looking foreward to seeing it this evening, when I get off work.

And you are verry varry correct concerning speed, the ASUS 6800 Pure DDR is by far the fastest 3D renderer to date, but 2D goes to the G400Max.

    Cool

No, I didn't take it that way at all. It was a hard choice for me not to keep the G400Max, I'm just a sucker for the speed. The demo is cool though, let me know what you think.

    Thumbs up

Have to give that a thumbs up....but wait, have you been to tranzmit.demonews.com. They have a whole bunch of 3d demos there, totally awesome. I just ran a few of them, the difference between the V3 and the G400M is simply put...outstanding! LOLOLOL, now that I bought this card, I just read there gearing up to release the G450, dont it figure. ROLMAO

    Question

    I'm getting 50-55fps in UT @ 1024*768*32

    Umm....really?

Just what are you running in that thing?A secret release athlon 1500mhz?

That has to be a mistake, didn't you really mean you were getting 30-35fps.(I am assuming you mean that you got this average in a timedemo, not the FPS counter,I get an average of 55-65FPS at 1024 x 768 with the FPS counter in a game with my g400 max)

A pIII 700e with 128 megs of ram and a geforce DDR tops out at about 33fps in UT at 1024 x 768,in a timedemo that is,yea you may be getting 50-55fps with the fps counter on in a game, but a timedemo is a more realistic
benchmark.I haven't even heard of anyone getting more then 38fps in UT,even at 640 x 480 in 16 bit color.

Just take a LOOK if you have doubts about this.

The UT engine is a CPU dependant card, and it gets a very low average FPS with all video cards.

Yeah, that was the average fps with the frame counter during game play. I'm not familiar with how to run the time demo in UT otherwise I would have. I have read that UT is CPU dependant, but the bottom line is that the geForce is faster and the G400Max isn't any faster than my OC'ed TNT2 (155/183) in 3DMark2000.

The geforce DDR is a good bit faster then the g400 max,but the g400 max spanks a geforce SDR in 32 bit color, plus it is about 70$ cheaper then the DDR,and the big one,it can handle 100AGP speed with agp x 2 and sidebanding enabled.

I have heard alot of talk about how the g400
max has a high minimum frame per second about equal to the geforce DDR in alot of games, and the high minimum frames per second rate matters much more then the highest frams per second. It does completly spank a tnt2 ultra into the ground in 32bit color though...........if you want to run in 16bit get a voodoo3 3000.

I will get myself an asus DDR though,in fact I have one coming in the mail,I had one get here DOA,talk about being cheesed off huh.
I heard that the smart doctor stuff is ****(a good friend that has one has told me this)
but it is still the nicest geforce out.

I would go for the G400 Max but im not planning on running games on resolutions higher than 1024x768 so the g400 max's ability to work at 1600x1200 res is on no need to me, hell my monitor doesnt even support that res!

Im not looking for a 3d card war again ok?
