I'm Sorry...but, when it comes to K6's
I find myself increasingly refering people to the AMDzone for info about the K6+ chips.
The guys over there really know their sh*t, about these things. They have progs and info galore. And, tweaks that you can't imagine. They are the most inovative bunch that you CAN imagine.
Instead of competing w/ each other for website hits we should work together to improve our computing world. And, perhaps draw some of their expertise here to Sysopt.

AMDZone is a great site for information about the Super7 architecture, but does this imply that perhaps the people there know any more about the K6-x platform than the people here?
Curious,

Not at all Robert. In fact, there are many Sysopt members, like yourself, that are K6 fans. You just don't come around much these days. And, you have to admit that those guys are the last of us diehards. Even I have a new Iwill and Duron, waiting for a P/S.
My point was about sharing the wealth of information, without the competitive wars of pride.

Yes JCB, you are right about the amdzone bbs, that's where the K6 diehards are. It's where I first learned about the + series chips and with further reading of posts finally decided to hunt one down and buy a K6-3+, much to my delight and amazement.
I quite enjoy having a SS7 running at 600Mhz with performance that beats a PIII at the same speed. The AMD + series are definately NOT the same as the 2 series.
So for any Socket 7 diehards take JCB's advice, check out any and all info you can find, and the amdzone's K6 forum is a another great source of info for the AMD K6 series chips. That's not to say anyone on this forum doesnt know about them, it's simply that more SS7 diehards congregate there.

Thanks for the clarification.

No prob Rob...
It's really sad that AMD finally built the perfect socket 7 chip and Via the stable platform for it... And poof it's gone.
What a sad ending for the old work horse.

I miss my old k2 300 and k3 400 450,they still can do everything the faster chips . except slower,my dfi motherboard 7, was more stable than my abit kt7 raid, but at least I made a good choice , a Duron and a abit raid. I have no reason to upgrade anymore, except a althon 1000 ,when the price is under $100, you reach a point and say why bother it plenty fast for what I am doing and just get some use out of what you have, I guess that's [part of the reason computer parts and computer's are so cheap now. Maybe I will wait till, I can get a 2000mz model?
-
I agree. I'll be lucky to get to a G w/ the Duron this year. But, I'm hoping for a $50 Palimino that will do the 2G next year.
But, ya gotta ask yourself:
Who really needs it?
I know, I know, lotsa folks do, me included.

You got it Doc. I'm no gamer myself, and I love the fact that the old socket 7's can still run on a 145W power supply. AMD's dedication to the K6 line has kept a lot of old boxes viable, for years to come.
I'm just a little pissed at em for abandoning the + chips so quickly. There is still a real market for em. But perhaps it's time. The mobos are getting scarce and expensive and the limited supply of + chips has driven the prices through the roof. It's just not feasible anymore.

Sunofwolf,
I think your instability on the ABIT is probably due to the fact that your Duron is in kind of rough shape (a little chipped and heavily OCced as I recall).
I still have an AMD K6-2+ and mobo if someone would like them--K6-2+ will do 600 Mhz at 2.1 volts rock stable with accompanying Golden Orb. Loved the system but needed more FPU power.

Long live socket 7! If you're not playing games or using photoshop, it's great to have a k-6. Well, games with 3d-now aren't actually that bad. Unreal plays good on my k6-500 with voodoo 3 3500...

I quote another member here in regards to my recent purchase of several Super7 mobos..
" You are wasting your money on Socket7 "
I do NOT agree with that statement.
Socket7 stuff has served me well for many years, I don't have the extra cash for a Thunderbird system, yet.
Thankfully I sold my Pee3 800 Dell yesterday to my sister.
I was never happy with it's performance.
One thing that griped my was the puny 100mhz FSB.
If I buy a new system I expect at least 112mhz FSB outta it..
