ARCTIC Silver help
i just bought some Arctic Silver and need some help on instructions. Should i apply it to the surface of the chip then let it set for 5 minutes before putting the heatsink on? and also how much should i use for my T-T-Bird chip? should i cover it with just enough compound to cover up the surface?

I'm assuming you are using the thermal compound and not the 2 part thermal epoxy.

There are also instructions for applying thermal compound at SubzeroPC.com

Does the epoxy work better than the paste?

The epoxy is for mounting heatsinks to soldered on chips, such as northbridges and video chipsets (GPU) or other chips that don't have a heatsink mount. I suppose if you never wanted to be able to modify your CPU you could use it on that too, but the paste is better for CPU's.

AS compound and AS epoxy give about the same thermal performance.
The epoxy is pretty much for gluing heatsinks to chips where no other method of attachment is available. You can use it for chipsets and video cards, but it's not recommended for CPU's because it's a permanent adhesive. You can mix regular Arctic Silver with AS epoxy to weaken the bond if you think you may need to remove the heatsink at some point. There are instruction for diluting AS Epoxy on their website.
