I need help overclocking PIII@450 on a 440bx board
I am an amature at this so dont laugh...
I have a pentium III chip currently at 450mhz
and I think (told you I was new) a Intel 440bx MB... I want to know exactly how to o/c it, it has a jumper, or something. Could someone give me some detailed instructions on how to do this... I have been told if i set the FSB at 133 (its currently at 100) I can acheive 600mhz w/out additional cooling, but i have no clue )
Thanks to all who reply

The Intel motherboards are the worst ones to have for overclocking but check in you rhandboock for FSB Settings. It should tell you how to change the jumpers for higher FSB.

I dont have a handbook...
I just have something like a manual on my computer... It has like a picture of a jumper and a little thing to put over it... The jumper is like three prongs and the thing only covers two... each combination works a different thing (setting clockspeeds...etc)
I have opened my PC and I am pretty sure i have located the jumper, but I have no clue what to do with it...
thats where anyone who KNOWS this stuff comes in...
Thanks again

We'll need to know what your motherboard is, and see if there's a manual available online, or if someone here has the same board.
When you first turn puter on, during the (POST) memory count, hit Pause key and write down the Bios string (the numbers on the bottom left of your screen). Then come back and post the results and we'll see what we can do.

Ok...
I think its...
4W4SB0X0.15A.0013.P08
The 0's had little dots in them, and I didn't know whether they are O's or zeros...
oh well you figure it out...
Plus, the string was located at the top left... so maybe I didn't even get the right thing but thats ok just let me know...
I appreciate your help
Thanks

Hmm. No idea what those numbers are.
Ok, try this. Go here http://www.ping.be/bios/ and hit the Bios Numbers link.
Then, down just a bit, are 3 ctbios links to download. It may id your board. Post back and good luck!
Did you get this computer new? How long ago? And from where? (name of store/vendor)

The numbers you found, 4w4sboxo etc...that is your bios version. You have an Intel 82443 440BX motherboard. I have overclocked this board. It's pretty simple. The jumper pins and 'the little plastic cover' is your first step. Put the jumper pin (plastic thing) over the lower 2 pins. You will need to enter your BIOS and adjust your clock speed after that. If you cannot enter the BIOS to adjust them, your board will need to be reset. To do this, replace the jumper settings as they were before. Now locate the battery on your motherboard. Remove the battery for AT LEAST 10 MINUTES. This will reset the motherboard and remove ALL the OEM information like the bootup screen for Dell, E-Machines, Compaq, Gateway, etc. You will then be able to access the 'locked' portions of the BIOS. You must now shutdown, place the jumper pin over the 2 lower pins, and reboot. You should then be able to adjust your front side bus settings. It is recommended you first jump from 100mhz to 117 mhz and reboot. If your system performs well, and runs cool still, you can make the jump to 133. PLEASE make sure you have pc133 ram installed. There is no sence in trying to max out pc 100 ram when it is only $50 for 128 meg. If you get lost, or need help, email me and I will be glad to help.
