cooling an overclocked voodoo3 2k
i bought a heavy duty ball bearing cpu heatsink fan to cool my voodoo3 2k. i used twist ties to mount the heatsink and fan to the original heatsink on my board. will this be ok or should i take the heatsink off the fan and mount just the fan to the original heatsink, or should i remove the original heatsink and but the new heatsink fan on the board. just wondering if the way i have it is okay? also how high can i go with this setup?

Two heatsinks are pretty redundant, because the fan only blows air out of the top one (I assume this is the way you have it). Heat also doesn't transfer well to the top one, so you're blowing the hot air off of the h/s with lesser heat. Choose the bigger Heatsink, and mount the fan to it. As for o/c'ing, I don't really know.

Yeah, that's right - it won't make much difference putting a heatsink on a heatsink, cos there's very little thermal contact between the original heatsink and the new one.
There was a discussion about this a while back and meembers were saying that the V3 2k heatsink was almost impossible to remove and the best thing to do is to have the fan blowing onto the original heatsink.
The V3 3k heatsink can be removed, but excellent results can be had by using the original and a fan.
So, it you want to test the idea, remove the new fan from the new heatsink, power the system up and let the graphics card get hot, then just hold the running fan over the original heatsink for about 30seconds and I'm sure you'll find that it's running almost cold!

What you do to remove the heatsink from a voodoo3 2000 is this:
Step1: Remove the card from your computer.
Step2: Place the card in a vise.
Step3: Fire up your good old cutting torch.
Step4: Heat the heatsink to the point of melting it.
Step5: Watch it drop off making sure it doesn't fall onto the board (Will melt it)
Step6: File off any remaining part of heatsink from under lying chip.
Step7: Strap on a new fan/heatsink and post a pic of the finished card here at sysopt

Here is a way to really drop your temp on VGA or CPU BIG TIME! The 80mm fan blows on the CPU and VGA Heatsink for maximum cooling.
