Question retail cpu - remove sponge and put paste or ???

    Hey,
I have retail k6-2 450@2.2. The temp is like
24-28 which is really cold. If i oc it
(as of today this peace of **** is 112x4.5 @
2.8 - i had to up to voltage again - it gets like 30-35. I am not sure if my readings are right because my work starts to lock up at like 30 degrees. MY QUESTION IS :
DO I HAVE TO REMOVE THE FACTORY PLACED SPONGE (OR WHATEVER IS THAT THING CALLED THAT IS BETWEEN THE CPU AND THE HEAT SINK) AND PUT THERMAL PASTE OR SHOULD I LEAVE IT AS IS ??

Please, give me your temp changes with the factory thing and with paste.

(i am really tired of this thing; it locks up
at 4x112@2.7 - i can play quake 3 for hours but Office 2000 constantly locks up, Explorer etc

Not sure of temp diff but with any processor thermal paste offers much better cooling. Remove sponge thing and use label remover or cellulose thinner to completely clean heatsink then apply a thin layer of paste - the thinner the better because the paste itself is an insulator. I think temp diff can be as much as 10 degrees C. Note you might also want to lap the cpu and heatsink. This is sanding the processor cap down so that it is perfectly flat. Lay sandpaper down on table then work processor round in circles using progressively finer paper- youll prob notice corners sand down first indicating uneven surface. Do the same with heatsink as this will allmost certainly be uneven. These provide optimum heat transfer.

    Hey Kido,
I would go to www.comppwizz.com and check out scotters wed page and look at making a cap and lapping the cap then apply a nice thin coat of paste. This should greatly improve the heat transfer from the CPU to the heat sink. I am working on the cap for my K6-2 450 it's really pretty easy and helps alot. If u don't want to make a cap then I would suggest putting paste on.

    Good Luck and Happy Hunting.
