    WinChip2

I am looking to upgrade a Compaq Presario 9232 (P120) and CDS 972 (P75) with the WinChip2-240. The WinChip is a 3.52v chip while the P120 & P75 are both 3.3v. Has anyone had any problems operating the WinChip2 at 3.3v? Anyone have any success/problems using this or other WinChips in Compaq computers?

    Thanks, JJO

I bought a WinChip2-240 recently, and installed it in an older socket 7 motherboard based on the Intel 430FX chipset. It wants
1.5x clock multiplier, 60 MHz bus frequency, VRE voltage (3.5v). Can not be overclocked
to 266 MHz. I haven't checked whether it runs
at 3.3V, too. It seems to run just fine under
Windows NT4/SP3, which is what I am running (can't stand 16/32 bit atrocities like Win95). So the comment that it just runs with Win95 is incorrect. Speed is about
equivalent to a PentiumMMX 233, i.e. not very fast. There is a very small bug reported in the 3DNow! implementation of the WinChip2 (doesn't show up in 3DNow! optimized games best I know). After upgrading the BIOS to the latest version for my board (12/97), the CPU is recognized as WinChip. Remember that adding more memory often does more good than upgrading the CPU.
I recommend to go to 64 MB before changing the CPU.

Where do these people get their information? - I never remember reading anything that indicates a Winchip runs only under Windows - It would be quite impossible to install an operating system if that were the case.

That info is kinda funny, because I've run Windows 95, 98, NT, Win2k, Linux and Novell Netware with a Winchip 2. A Winchip 2 is roughly on par with a Pentium W/MMX for performance, and a little above if 3DNOW enabled apps are involved. It is not the greatest chip around, but they do the job. Where does this 'only runs windows' stuff come from anyway? Somebody figuring that because it is a 'Winchip' that nothing else will run on it?

    Cool

I've never touched a WinChip. the last guy I spoke to thought they were real good for the money, but I never seen one perform so I can't comment. I seem to remember them being Optimized for Windows applications, though. Should make a noticeable difference over a P120, though

RONALDvd#22:You are right!I can't say I heard bad things about it (I have never had one myself).I'd rather buy an AMD for a couple of bucks more (I did about a year ago,K6-2 333)It runs 400 fine.If you can afford a Winchip, you can afford a AMD.Take the AMD.Or buy a 2nd hand PII/Celeron.I haven't heard good things about Winchip (no bad things either). But what I did hear about it,makes Winchip a bad recommandation.
