Socket 5 or 7?
Quick question. I know the P75 up to the P133 are socket 5. What about the 166 and 200 non-MMX? I think they're socket 7 but I'm not sure. Thanks.

All Pentium Classic and Pentium MMX processors, as well as the Cyrix 6x86 and AMD K5/K6 processors are all socket 7.

I think that the P75 was avalable as a socket 5, but it was also avalable as a soket 7. My old P100 was a socket 7.

The Pentiums up to 133 were all socket 5 chips, and are compatable with (meaning they will run on) both socket 5 and socket 7 motherboards. What I want to know is if the non-MMX 166 and 200 chips were actually socket 5 chips and would run on socket 5 motherboards. Thanks.

one of my bodies had a pentium 166 MMX at a socket 7!!! Should I ask him?

My pentium 166 non-mmx is in a socket 5 board right now.Waiting for the ax59 to arrive. Roomate's k5-133 is in a socket 3.
Both will work in a socket 7.

Thank you, that's what I wanted to know. Any idea about the 200 non-MMX?

Thanks.

The socket number is usually found on the white socket itself, molded into the plastic. There might be manufacturers that don't have this label, I don't know. If yours came with anywhere from a P75 to a P133, chances are it's a socket 5.
Hey Nathan, good link. That could come in handy.

Thanks a lot folks. I looked on the socket and says it is a 3 Checked the link and it shows nothing above 133 on the socket 3 list, so I guess if I want a faster CPU means a new MOBO .

Socket 3 is actually a 486 class socket style. The AMD 133Mhz chip is basically the fastest CPU that will go into a socket 3. The only way to go faster on a socket 3 board is to overclock that chip. I have run several of them at 160mhz without problems, but even that is slow by today's standards.
