    CELERON 333 with ASUS P2B trouble free over clocking but HARDDRIVE problem!

    hai to all

    thanks a lot for your "lot of useful post"

    my over-clocking result & seeking further guidance for MAINTAINING


    I was able to do that..with 83mhz at "5.0 x" bus freq multiplier
    iam getting 416 MHZ stable at this moment with win 98 & nt

    I did not change the VOLTAGE or AGP freq

    can you pl go thro this & guide me further
    REALLY SORRY FOR THE long MAIL

    the only "sort of problem is" my quantum fireball 6.4 b gives scratching noise(even at 375 mhz) while while booting & also while accessing application from "c:" drive like OUTLOOK, XING PLAYER

    ironically, when i ran my AVI FILE captured with matrox g200-tv it doesnot give any problem
    which is in the partition of the same disk but in "d:" drive
    even after running the system at the original speed"333 mhz" still the noise is there
    even booting from floppy gives noise?
    WHY IS THIS?
    my system is

    celeron 333
    steeping rev 2(intel 80867190)

    motherboard ASUS P2B
    RAM 128MB(hope pc 100)
    AGP MATROX G200MHZ 8 MB RAM
    PCI CIRRUS LOGIC 5446 2 MB RAM
    (I use this for dual monitor purpose..but after OVER CLOCKING I have not used dual monitor)

    QUANTUM 6.4 GB HDD
    YAMAHA 32 BIT SOUNDCARD(PCI)
    YAMAHA CD-RW & CREATIVE 40X CD-ROM

    actually I did not change the voltage at all FOR AGP
    I read in the AUS P2B manual the default is 2/3 OF THE CPU BUS or host frequency
    is this ok for my AGP & PCI CARD

    I opened the chassis & worked..there is no HEAT, I can feel when I touched the PROCESSOR AREA or hard disk area

    when I tried 100 MHZ system booted with 500 MHZ but when WINDOWS started nothing happened
    I have to switch off the power to change the bus freq
    so I brought the BUS FREQUENCY back to 83MHZ
    is this ok for my AGP & PCI CARD

    cause I use for video capturing & video editing

    SHOULD I GO FOR any heat sink if yes which is GOOD
    it is not easy to get A HEAT SING here in India
    cause very few(i hope) go for over clocking

    In my BIOS under thermal temparature PROCESSOR TEMP is not vailable & motherboard temparature is
    "32-35 CELSIUS" when chassis is opened & "35-37 CELSIUS" while closed chassis .

    what is maximum I can go for for MOTHERBOARD & for processor?
    how do you i find my temp for processor?


    in my BIOS -VER BX2I1009.AWD- should I KEEP "ignore" for thermal & voltage monitor or
    should I keep the other setting to monitor these two?

    which is the best APPLICATION to CHECK STABILITY?

    Well I will say this...the 83mhz FSB is a KILLER for most componants in the computer (your PCI device will be running at 41mhz!! not their rated 33mhz. If you want to run at the 83mhz FSB you should change your AGP to 2/3 and turn off UDMA on your harddrive and even set it to PIO mode4. (will lessen the chance of corrupting your data). if you want to try the 100mhz FSB you will need to raise your voltage from the stock 2.0 to somewhere around 2.2 or 2.4 (you have to "tape" to get the different voltages on the ASUS board. I'm at work right now at dont have the addy for a great site that would walk you thru how to tape and what to tape. (if none of my fellow clockers have that addy (I have posted it before) I will do so when I get home).

    That should get you started. (BTW if your harddrive wasnt makeing noise before you went to the 83mhz FSB you might have slightly damaged it [img]/forum/frown.gif[/img] )

    There really isnt a "fix" for this problem, the 83mhz bus is as mntsnow said, A KILLER. It can create odd errors with any device on your system, causing system instability. I have had problems just as you had at these high pci speeds, and there really isnt a cure for it. I'm hoping you didnt damage your hard drive, but could you be more specific on the exact noise it makes? Does it make the noise every second or just times when it reads? If it doesnt do this at the normal speeds, this is a sign the drive is puking at the 83mhz bus speed (which is very common). I'd recommend setting back down if you want stability, and dont want to cause any further(if any) harm to your system devices.

    as you have asked(WEE96)
    MY HARD DISK gives a sort ot "ttttttrrrrrk" sound (sort of scratching noise)
    only when data are accessed
    i was told that if i format it(sound will be gone-any one tried this with QUANTUM FIREBALL IDE 6.3 GB) & REINSTALL WIN98 & runs the system at 100mhz FSB(where pci will be 66MHZ -2/3 formula)
    everything will be alright
    is this right?
    by the way can win98 ^ WIN NT SERVER can be used in a overclock'ed system
    anyone tried VIDEO CAPTURING & EDITING with overclocked system?
