Overclocking an AMD K6-2 to 350 from 300
I have an AMD K6-2 processor at 300MHz. I wanted to overclock it to 350. I figured that it isn't too much and that the CPU can handle it. At the same time I was overclocking it I added a CD writer, an HP 7200 external. When I booted up there were no problems. But when I was running Unreal it just kicked me right to the desktop after about 15 minutes of play. But the computer didn't freez, I just went right back into the game. I tried formatting the system but it still does it. Is it possible that it is the CD writer or is it the CPU. I doubt it is the CPU because the computer didn't freez but any ideas would be appreciated.
thanx in advance.

Why don't you just clock it back to 300 to find the answer. You will see that it's the overclocking that does that to your game. Not every game though, only CPU intensive ones like unreal.

Yes I've had the same problem on an Aopen59pro board with 128mb ram (the dimms are not pc100 though and I feel this may be the trouble) It runs perfect at 333mhz. ie 3.5 x 95mhz but I cant get 3 x 112 or 3.5 x 100. As you dont state what dramms you have this may be the problem

It is more than likely a overheating problem. I have an AMD K6-2 366 @ 400 and i play alot of command and conqure red alert and i have alot of extra cooling and it all runs great for the first few hours but after awhile when the processor really heats up it will connect for an internet game but thats it ( no freeze just kicks me back to desktop ) This may be the same thing. What kinda cooling do you have on you processor and also think about the cooling for the rest of the board. ( CPU's aren't the only things running hot ) Add some cooling and play quick other than that i would try 333. Good luck

After running my AMD K6-2 for 3months at 4 x 95 380 I decided to try 3.5 x 112 one more time since I just flashed to the current bios for my FIC 503+ ver 1.2a.
Guess what its still working without a crash at the currecnt seetings.
AMD K6-2 300 Non CXT o/c to 392 (3.5 x 112)2.4v
Gulillemot Phoenix Banshee
FIC 503+ ver 1.2a
64 PC 100 Ram cas-2 down to cas-3 but Turbo settings on
IBM Non UDMA hd mode 4 switched down to mode 3
Nice heatsink and fan along with thermal paste and I have a power supply fan blowing across the cpu.The only crash I have had in 26+hrs in when I has the cas set to cas-2(wich works fine at 100 bus)

it is heat my 300 at 400 epox em would quit games abruptly till i added those nidec blowers if you have tnt it seems to increase your heat sensitivity also you really have to play with voltage on cpu i use a potentiomiter for a jumper and i can fine tune volts 2.64 sweet spot if i go 2.67 i get windows freezes if i go lower i get blue faults and windows protection errers on bootup ,heat control and voltage sweet spot you can get her stable.

Hello tpre!
U say that its the core voltage which is the problem. Maybe u are right, but how are u able to set it to so strange numbers like 2.67??
2.67 isn't that much. I've heard that 2.5 might damage your cpu?
I get a Wíndows Protection error too, but I don't know what to do about it. I think I will try to install win nt, maybe that will solve my problem. If u have other suggestions I would be glad to hear them

the processors will run up to 2.8v with cooling.
Usually to hit the 400 from a 350 chip you need 2.3/2.4v
From 300 to 400, 2.5/2.6v when you have a nice chip.
Not all of them are nut's like us tpetre.
LOL
