    UNDERSTANDING SDRAM TIMINGS and LATENCY

For a really thouough understanding of SDRAM timings and latency, study SDRAM Survey at www.bxboards.com and Demystification of SDRAM ... at optimize.bhcom1.com/english/hardinfo/pc100.htm

Both also have some very useful charts of chip numbers and performance.

    Aaaah Man!

I went to bxboards survey and found out I was duped. I purchased 128 meg of 100mhz ram from PC Club. I told them I wanted highest quality and fastest they had. He said the best was 7ns sdram. I had not seen or heard of 7ns, I have seen 8 & 10 for sale on the internet but never 7ns. I asked him several times about the 7ns, he said it was new and that they just got it in. So I got some took it home and installed it. I checked the sandra soft progy and it reported it as 100mhz 7ns, so I was happy.

Now, after reading the survey I come to find that 7ns ram does not even exist yet! Whats more the numbers on my ram chip do not even come close to any thing on the survey or the numbers in the " breaking the ram code" post.

I am way past the 7 day return limit to!

    Grrrrrrr!

Bummer! Unless you can claim misrepresentation...

If you're stuck with it, how does it perform?

    Roy,
I got that memory to run 140 cas3 on the IWILL 100+ and it runs 133 CAS2 on the Shuttle 649A and the BH6, I'll try it later on the Asus P2B but it looks like I'll have to grab the Aopen or BX6 to get in the 153 range to see if it works.
I didn't ask my contact when he called but he did tell me to be quiet as the manufacturing isn't signed yet.
I don't mind if you call or write but I would appreciate it if you didn't pass around the address and such that I posted because I don't want a bunch of people writing them for where they can get it.

In trade I'll keep you up to date on what they do and where you can get them as soon as I know.

Well, I have tried 112,124,133 settings and all are no go's. I guess I will save my pennys and get some real mem. The mem Bighammer is refering to sounds real good.

If you or Bighammer could post info on where to get it once its available, I will get a slice or two of that.

bighammer - My lips are sealed!

Right now I have RAM that's faster than my CPU. However, I do look forward to your results. Thanks.

Well, I found out about my ram thanks to the Home.erols.com site. It had a reference to the numbers on my chip, its Fugitsu and its rated at 100mhz max Cas latency of 3.

Roy, what do you recomend for a replacement?
I would like to get 128megs of just simply the best will do.

    Thanks for imput

Reputable vendors are catching on to the importance of CAS Latency specs. Just make sure it's PC-100 Certified and bears the PC-100 Label with the specs in code.

Click on www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum3/HTML/000176.html to break the code.
