will i need to reinstall windows if i install a new motherboard and chip?
I was wondering if i would need to reinstall windows cause i am getting a celeron 300a and an abit BH6 motherboard. And also if i do reinstall if it would wipe out the links to all my other programs already installed? If thats the case i don't want to reinstall windows cause i would then have to reinstall everything else as well. i would rather re-format instead of doing that.
whats your suggestions?

No Even if you do reinstall for whatever reason, settings and such are maintained.

When I purchased a new SOYO SY6BA+ board and a 300A a few weeks ago, I was told that the "preferred" process was to format the HD and install windows from scratch.
Since I have a lot of stuff that I did not want to reinstall/setup, I followed the following instructions. I did have problems recognizing my mouse because my system.ini file got corrupted, but once I cleaned it up, everything worked fine.
1. boot old system in safe mode
(you must be in safe mode)
2. from device manager, click on system
devices and remove all of the items
3. shutdown the system
4. remove motherboard/cpu, install new one
5. boot the system using normal clock speed
Windows will setup itself for the new board/cpu system.
Hope this helps... Ralph

no. but you probably will have to reinstall all your peripheral's software or direct the location of the .inf file of each cause windows will detect them as newly installed.

Hey guys
hd space permitting simply copy the win98 folder from your cd to the hd. when you boot up and your system does not recognize the cd you still got the w98 folder. later simply delete the folder or leave it on for future install problems.
