AMD-K6-2 wont run at 100mhz
I've got trouble with clocking AMD-K6-2 300 at 100Mhz all the markings and codes say that it is 100Mhz. Mobo is PCChips M590 PC100 and
64meg of PC100 Ram. I phoned the supplier and they have replaced it with a AMD-K6-2 350 and guess what, still the same trouble, turn the machine on and nothing but bleeps. I've cleared the bios and started again setting up the correct cpu speed this time it booted but when I tried to load windows all I got was
general protection errors only about a minute into the instalation. The chips will run but at a lower clock, but whats the point of
buying 100mhz.
Does this indicate a ram problem, although I have tried changing it, or settings in
the bios?
Thanks

go to the bios and try for more conservative memory settings (like cas 3 instead of cas 2). Odds are good your memory isn't so hot.

At this point I doubt that it's the CPU. Yes, it could be the RAM but it seems rather puzzling that you did not have the same results with the 300mhz chip. Is there anyting else that changed in the configuration between the 300 and 350 chips? And what is the core voltage set at?
Is the motherboard new in the system also?
I didn't clearly understand if you are trying to install Windows for the first time or if you are trying to boot off an existing version. If you are trying to boot an existing Windows at 350mhz on a K6-2 it may be that you need the K6-2 350 patch for windows to be installed before it will boot.
Finally, It was nice of your vendor to replace the CPU with a faster one - did they charge you extra for that? If not, I would really like to know what supplier you got your CPU from - -

I've had the same problem with both chips.
The ram has been changed twice and the voltage is set to the correct 2.2v.
I'm trying to install windows98 for the first time, although it will install if I lower the clock.
My vendor only changed it to 350 because thats all he had and because I gave him a roasting on the phone.
Thanks

If you have tried different memory and CPU's, it has to be the chipset on you board. Take the board back.

Ploon,
thanks for the additional info...by the way, I think I will have to agree with JimS.

Try to check your AMD cpu label
see if AFR66 exist?
This kind of chip is not certified to
run 100MHz bus speed but 66 only
check the tomshardware site to get
more info...
